Standing Committee Announces Nominees

June 28, 2006 -- The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark announces the slate of candidates for the 10th Bishop of Newark as presented by the special diocesan Nominating Committee.

The candidates are:

The Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe, Congregational Development Officer in the Diocese of California

The Rev. Mark Beckwith, Rector, All Saints Church in Worcester, MA

The Very Rev. Petero A.N. Sabune, Pastor and Protestant Chaplain at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, Ossining, NY and Associate at Trinity Church in Ossining,.

The Rev. William Hallock (Chip) Stokes, Rector, St. Paul's Church in Delray Beach, FL.

The Nominating Committee began its work a year ago, initially by preparing a profile of the diocese and those qualities sought in its next bishop. The members evaluated every person nominated thoroughly and prayerfully before the final selections were made. The committee based its choices solely on how the nominees matched the profile of the diocese and did not take into consideration their race, gender or sexual orientation.

"The Standing Committee is deeply grateful to the Nominating Committee for its hard work over the past year," said Edgar Kim Byham, President of the Standing Committee. "They have admirably fulfilled their charge from the Standing Committee to give us a slate of candidates, any one of whom would make an excellent Bishop of Newark.

"These nominees, as well as those who may be nominated by petition, will provide an outstanding opportunity for our amazing diocese, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to discern who would best lead us into the next phase of Christ's mission in northern New Jersey," he said.

Nominations by petition must be sent to Byham no later than 6:00 PM EDT on Wednesday, July 5, 2006. Details for the process of nomination by petition may be found on the website of the Diocese of Newark at: http://www.dioceseofnewark.org/nom_by_petition.html.

All the candidates will be invited to take part in a series of presentations throughout the diocese in September, where they will meet and talk to electors and all others interested. On September 23rd, a special convention will be held in Newark to elect the new bishop. The vote will be in two orders, clergy and lay, and a majority of both orders on the same ballot is required for election. Following consents from other church Standing Committees and bishops, the newly-elected bishop is to take over for retiring bishop John P. Croneberger in January.
