Input Sought in Bishop Search
by Bill McColl

September 7, 2005 -- What are the qualities that the people of the Diocese of Newark want in their next bishop? How should the diocese describe itself to those interested in becoming its bishop?

The Nominating Committee for the 10th Bishop of Newark is seeking widespread participation throughout the Diocese in developing a diocesan profile to tell potential candidates what the diocese is like, where it is going and what it hope to be.

Clergy input will be gathered at Clergy Day on September 27.

Members of congregations will be asked their views on Reflection Sunday, October 2. In preparation for Reflection Sunday, a series of Learning Leaflets have been distributed to Rectors and Wardens to copy and use as bulletin inserts. These Learning Topics also are available on the Nominating Committee website.

Additionally, four regional listening days to hear lay views have been scheduled in October (box below). The Nominating Committee asks all who can, to attend one of these regional meetings.

In these meetings, participants will be asked to give their ideas about what should be included in our diocesan profile.

Discussion will center on four specific questions:

  • What is working well in the Diocese now?
  • What needs to work well in the future?
  • What leadership characteristics should we seek in our next bishop?
  • Other than demographics and structure of the Diocese, what else do you believe should be addressed in the Profile?

The profile is the first step in the process of selecting a new leader for Newark. It also is an important tool in helping the diocese look at itself and to think about the kind of future it hopes to have as a community of faith.

The Nominating Committee will be leaning heavily on the profile in determining who will be the four to six finalists to be voted upon by the special convention of the Diocese in September 2006.
